Why is fresh food better than processed food?
Plants and animals are made up of similar types of chemicals substances. Most of the nutrients present in plants and animals are arranged into six groups: water, carbohydrates, proteins, fat, minerals and vitamins. This is important to understand why fresh food is better than processed food – for you, for me, for our dogs, and for every living being-. Because eating what our body is made up of and can “understand” unleashes the power of food and preserves our health and life.
Our body is designed to nourish and repair itself using nutrients from nature. Our organs take the nutrients in foods and break them down into smaller parts that are easier to digest, absorb and ultimately use. Some parts are used to keep us running (like energy found in carbohydrates and fats), other parts are used to repair tissues and build muscles (like proteins), others are used to facilitate the function of organs (like vitamin A for the eyes), others bind to transport a different nutrient or to make one nutrient work, and so on. What is not used is stored or eliminated.
Our organs help us to digest, absorb and use the nutrients, to take them all over our body, to store what we will use later, to filter and eliminate what we don’t need and the waste produced in the process of digestion.
And just like that… food keep us alive and become part of our structure and cells. That is why we need to fuel our body with the best “gasoline” available. Because we will literally become what we eat, and the food we feed our body will impact our health and quality of life.
When we eat natural and fresh foods, our body recognize it more easily and don’t have to put so much effort to digest, absorb, and use the nutrients. Most of the content of real food is actually used to nourish the body, producing less waste. Real food does not produce inflammation because it doesn’t have artificial substances such as colors, flavors, chemicals, preservatives or man made supplements.
When we eat processed foods, our organs work harder to break it down. Our body is not able to use a lot of it thus producing more waste and toxins that needs to be eliminated. Less nutrients are available to nourish the body, to repair tissues, to support basic living functions. Also processed foods are higher in fat and sodium to make it more palatable.
This is why in the long run we end up suffering from chronic diseases like pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), liver and kidney diseases (from taking all those toxins and waste out), problems in the heart (with all the bad fat stored in the body), cancer (alteration of our body cells), and so on. In the short term the lack of good nutrients will show up as problems with digestion, with hair, with skin…
Same happens to our dogs. Because commercial dog food in the shelve of a grocery store is processed food, because kibbles and canned foods are processed foods, full of preservatives to make it last forever and make owners life “easier”. Made with fillers, low quality nutrients and added supplements to make it “affordable”.
When we eat real, fresh food (you, me, your dog) we are adding years to our lives. We are keeping the doctor away by preventing chronic diseases and extending not only our life, but the quality of it.
The good news is that cells renew. Some of the damage made to our cells by building them up with the wrong things can be reversed if you start eating right. Add years to your life, and to your dog’s life.
Now you know!
